An article in Divorce Magazine presented a statistic that 49 percent of all marriages result in an executed divorce. The article went on to present that 82 percent of married couples in America reach their fifth year of marriage versus 52 percent of all American couples reach their 15th year of marriage. The average length of a first marriage in America lasts for around eight years. The statistics of divorce appear overwhelming, but the impact of divorces in America is much more of a concern.

The most significant impact divorces have upon the American society is the negative impact upon the American economy. Most often what occurs after a divorce is a woman’s personal and her children’s standard of living goes drastically down. Single women with children are more likely than their married counterparts to have an income that is half of the poverty line. There are many single-family homes in America, and with so little capital it hurts the economy of their respective communities. In fact, a single divorce can cost state and federal governments at least 30,000 dollars in court fees, cause more bankruptcies to occur to individuals and cause more single families to enroll in food stamps and public housing. Divorce does not just a negative impact upon the economy, but upon children, as well.

It was reported that between 1970 and 1996 the rate of children living with both parents in America declined from 85 percent of all families to 68 percent of all families. That is a 17 percent decrease over two decades for the state of the American family. Nearly 50 percent of all American children will watch their parents divorce, while half of that 50 percent will watch one of their parent go through a second divorce. The impact on children having to witness a divorce ranges from constant depression or mood swings to threats of suicide or committing suicide. The future of children living in a single family is impacted as well since those children are more likely to divorce at some time in their life than they will stay married. The behavior of children is impacted also because teenage women living in a single-family home are more likely to drop out of school or have children before being married.

Divorces in America have devastated local economies, children and, to some extent, the American culture. T.W. Jackson created a product called the “Magic of Making Up,” and it is one such product aimed at couples to help heal their relationship during a separation. The systematic process Jackson lays out in Magic of Making Up helps couples address their core issues. It is vital to have products like this to help lessen the rate of divorce and its impact.
